L-Shaped vs. U-Shaped vs. Galley Kitchens: Which Layout Is Best?

Choose a galley kitchen for narrow rooms and one main cook, an L-shaped kitchen for open-plan spaces where you want an island, and a U-shaped kitchen when you need the most counter space and storage and the room is wide enough.

Galley kitchen: pros and cons

  • Pros: very efficient, no corner cabinets, works in small spaces.
  • Cons: can feel tight with two cooks; through-traffic is a problem if both ends are open.

L-shaped kitchen: pros and cons

  • Pros: open and social, flexible, easy to add an island or dining area.
  • Cons: less storage than a U; long runs can stretch the work triangle.

U-shaped kitchen: pros and cons

  • Pros: maximum storage and counter space, efficient triangle.
  • Cons: two corners to solve; can feel closed-in in a small room.

What about one-wall and G-shaped kitchens?

  • One-wall kitchens put everything on a single run. They suit studios and open-plan spaces; adding an island gives them a second work surface.
  • G-shaped kitchens are a U-shape with a peninsula on one end. They add even more counter space and seating, but need a generous room so the opening doesn’t feel cramped.

How to handle corners in L- and U-shaped kitchens

Corners are where storage is lost or gained. Common solutions:

  • Lazy susan corner bases with rotating shelves.
  • Blind-corner cabinets with pull-out or swing-out organizers.
  • Diagonal corner wall cabinets for more upper storage.
  • Corner drawers in some frameless lines.

Always check corner door and drawer clearances in elevation, so handles and appliance doors don’t collide.

Windows, doors and traffic

The room usually decides the layout before style does. Map windows (sink placement), doorways (traffic paths) and where the kitchen opens to living space. A layout that routes household traffic away from the cooking zone feels better every day than one with more cabinets.

Space guidelines for any layout

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recommends work aisles of at least 42" for one cook and 48" for two or more, and walkways of at least 36". More detail is in our kitchen layout planning guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which kitchen layout is the most efficient?

A galley kitchen is usually the most efficient for one cook, because everything is within a few steps.

Is an L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen better?

An L-shaped kitchen is better for open-plan homes and adding an island; a U-shaped kitchen is better when you need maximum storage and counter space in a wider room.

How wide should a galley kitchen be?

Allow at least 42 inches between the counters for one cook and 48 inches for two, following NKBA guidance.

What is a G-shaped kitchen?

A G-shaped kitchen is a U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula extending from one end, adding counter space and seating. It needs a fairly large room.
